Trail Head - Get it?

Hi, I’m a long-time multi-sport adventurer, journalist and photographer.

As a Registered Maine Guide and former president and founding member of MOAC, the Maine Outdoor Adventure Club, I have led countless hiking, backpacking and whitewater rafting trips throughout Maine I’m also an avid mountain biker, kayaker, and downhill and x-c skier. I thru-hiked the 2,150-mile Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine, and completed two-dozen long distance trails in the United States, Canada and Europe, including a recent coast-to-coast trek across Ireland.

I’m an active MATC and ATC member and maintains two sections of Appalachian Trail, one at East Carry Pond and another north of Leeman Brook Lean-to.

I am the hiking/camping columnist for the Portland Press Herald and write an outdoor adventure blog at MaineOutdoorJournal.com. My writing and photographs also have  appeared in AMC Outdoors, Maine Magazine, New England Ski Journal, Acadia Journal, Maine Cyclist, Backpacker.com and a host of other publications. I am an active member of the New England Outdoor Writers Association, Eastern Ski Writers Association, and New England Travel Writers Network.

I have a B.A. in Geography-Anthropology from the University of Southern Maine, and a Master of Business Administration and B.S. in Forestry from the University of Maine (and maintains a Maine Professional Forester license).

My day job is Transportation Programs Manager with the Greater Portland Council of Governments, where I primarily manage GO MAINE, Maine’s statewide commuter transportation service. Kish also serves as president of the Association for Commuter Transportation – Patriot Chapter. I recently completed the ACT Leadership Academy and was recognized as a TDM Fellow.

I live on 60 acres in Bowdoin, Maine with my wife Fran Leyman, two cats and a mountain of outdoor gear.
